2 years ago my son and I found out that we both have food allergies, so when Halloween rolled around I wondered what we would do with all the candy he collected! He was 2 at the time, so I didn't give him candy anyway...but I still wanted him to be able to go trick-or-treating like all the other kids. I was so excited when I heard about Halloween Candy Buyback! It was the perfect solution. I went on their website and found a local dentist office where my son could bring all his candy. They weighed it, gave him $1 per pound of candy plus he got a free toothbrush! He was quite happy (as you can see in the picture above showing off his healthy teeth, new toothbrush and a crisp $5 bill!) All of the candy the dentist collected was sent to the troops overseas.
Concerned Dental Care of Port Jefferson has teamed up with the Three Village Girl Scouts to participate in the Candy Buyback Program. Kids can bring their candy in during office hours between 11/1 and 11/9 and receive $1 for every pound of candy! You don't have to have food allergies to take part though, anyone can stop by to trade their candy for cash!
The Girl Scouts will then take the candy and be distributing it to several Organizations. They will donate some of it to Operation Veronica, a volunteer organization in Rocky Point that is led by Janet Godfrey. The women there assemble care packages weekly for the troops stationed in Afghanistan. Some of the donated candy will also go to the Jacob’s Light Foundation in Ronkonkoma, who also send care packages to the troops. The Girl Scouts from Setauket will use the rest of the candy to make Christmas Crackers stuffed with candy and send them off to the troops.
