Living in a technological age has its wonderful perks, but some downsides come along with it as well. Children tend to not want to be outside and explore nature like they used to when we were children or when our parents were children. As a result, children are dealing with lack of coordination, obesity, sensory dysfunction, and behavioral problems. They are lacking that traditional “stay outside till the street lights come out” experience. TimberNook helps foster this tradition in an amazingly unique way.
TimberNook offers the “ultimate sensory experience” for your child this summer. It will quickly become their favorite thing about summer. Parents are raving about this exciting program: “They loved being able to play, explore, create, and build outside rain or shine. They saw each day as a new adventure and can't wait to do it again!”
Long Island is lucky to be the only location in the entire state of New York to have this innovative program AND we are lucky enough that it is in our own backyard! TimberNook is located nearby at the Brookhaven Country Day Camp in Yaphank, where TimberNook children are entitled to a discount.
TimberNook is not a traditional nature program. “TimberNook provides a unique setting that literally fosters imagination, creativity, and integration of the senses,” states local owner Dr. Megan Hansen. This program allows the child to lead at their own pace in ample unstructured play time. Rules are implemented for safety, but otherwise, they are not rushed or forced into anything. Children are themselves the best judge of what they are capable or incapable of doing.
This “ultimate sensory experience” will challenge the mind, body, and senses of your child through meaningful play. TimberNook’s goal is to intricately weave nature’s therapeutic aspects with the uniqueness of childhood development. “The children get to create their own societies out in the woods, build structures together as a group, play pretend with peers, and come up with their own games. Children challenge their vestibular system, also known as their ‘balance system,’ and coordination by moving in all directions while swinging from a rope, rolling down grassy hills, balancing on planks, and running from one place to the next,” states Hansen. The results create inspiration for creative play that will challenge your child and encourage them to become stronger and grow to new heights.
TimberNook Long Island offers a variety of six different programs for you and your child to choose from. These are Extreme Art, Going Wild, Barefoot and Buckets, Storybook, Enchanted, and Wild Ones. Most of this programming starts at age 5, with the exception of Storybook which starts at age 4. Please click the above links to find more detailed information about each program.
