I am a huge fan of the Addams Family (1991) and Addams Family Values (1993) movies. They are just like any other family in America…parents madly in love, yet playfully quarrel about mundane topics, siblings fighting to the death, meddling elderly grandma who lives with them, a crazy uncle who overstays his visit, a few strange house pets, and a butler! BUT…this is not a movie review. This is a play review of The Addams Family New Musical Comedy performed by Theatre Three Productions!
I walked in with my assumptions about what the play would be about and was pleasantly caught off guard. The story was absolutely hilarious and suspenseful! The actors performed their characters brilliantly. It was down to the very last detail of their mannerisms and quirky little smirks! Makeup and costume design was astonishing. There were several ghastly ancestors who were ghosts from different time periods. I appreciate that each person was styled accordingly to their specific time periods such as a 1920’s flapper with short bob wearing an art deco flapper dress and a pirate with a parrot on his shoulder! I was laughing in my seat the entire 2 acts! The set designs were very creative with turning walls. The props had amazing details of goth and steampunk styles. The orchestra sounded beautiful and hit every comedic note!
As I watched this play…it had a lot of meaning to life. A young love between Wednesday and a young man named Lucas who is from a different side of the cemetery…the living side! Opposites attract, yet they may cause doubts. Morticia and Gomez display what a marriage should have…trust. This new star-crossed love between Wednesday and Lucas has literally shaken both of their worlds and their families in it!
I enjoyed this play and patiently wait for my next visit at Theatre Three down in Port Jefferson.
