By Helen Partlow, Port Jefferson Macaroni Kid Publisher October 13, 2020

Please always check the status of your destination before visiting.

The leaves have started to change!  Here is a list of a few spots that you and your family can head to enjoy this year's fall foliage.

Are you looking for the best spots for fall foliage in our part of Long Island? We are lucky on Long Island to have so many great spots for leaf-peeping! We've listed our family's favorite places to see autumn leaves in our area and beyond!

Want to know when fall colors will be at their peak on Long Island? Check out this fall foliage prediction map from SmokyMountains.com. Simply move the slider at the bottom of the map to get an idea when leaves will be at peak colors on Long Island and across the United States. No map like this can be 100 percent accurate, of course, but it can give you a good idea of when fall colors will peak.  According to the site, some time around 10/26 should be peak!

Ready to go find some beautiful fall leaves on Long Island?

Here are my family's favorite spots for leaf-peeping in the North Shore Brookhaven area:

Avalon Park and Preserve

Harbor Rd, Stony Brook

Avalon is an iconic park in this area of Long Island.  Located in quaint Stony Brook Village, Avalon has a beautiful and large duck pond, as well as several miles of hiking and biking trails for you to enjoy.  There are many different trail options, so one is sure to fit your family.  Dogs are welcomed at Avalon, as long as you keep them leashed.  You can find a map of this preserve by clicking here.

Frank Melville Memorial Park

1 Old Field Road, Setauket

My family affectionately calls this park "The Turtle Park."  There is a large pond in the heart of this park, making for beautiful scenery.  By the bridge, you can see many turtles that live on the logs as well as enjoy ducks, swans, and herons that call the pond home.  There is a large population of bamboo trees through the forest, which also makes this a unique destination.  Dogs are welcomed at Frank Melville as long as you keep them leashed.

Wildwood State Park

790 Hulse Landing Road, Wading River

Nestled on the north shore of Long Island, Wildwood State Park has 600 acres of forest overlooking the Long Island Sound.  Some trails are open - please call the office for more details at (631) 929-4314.

Bayard Cutting Arboretum

440 Montauk Hwy, Great River

The Bayard Cutting Arboretum is a beautiful place to explore alongside the Connetquot River.  Check out their map by clicking here.  Parking is $8 through October unless you have an Empire Pass.

Quogue Wildlife Refuge

3 Old Country Road, Quogue

This is a beautiful spot on the south fork with plenty of marked trails that also go around a lake.  There are rehabilitated animals for you to also enjoy such as a red-tailed hawk, fox, and owl.  They also offer programming, such as fall foliage paddles on the lake.
