It seems everyone on Long Island is looking for ways to get out of the house this winter! Fresh air is good for the soul — not to mention it helps to get the wiggles out of the kids.
We put together a list to help you find fun things to do this winter with your family in the greater Port Jefferson area (or just a short drive away!) during these next few winter months on Long Island, New York:
1. Go Ice Skating
Ice skating is something that my family really wants to try someday and we are lucky to have a few options! The Rinx at Harborfront Park is in Port Jefferson Village and Waterdrinker Farm in Manorville has a rink too - except theirs is actually artificial so you need to wear their special skates.
2. Join a Pop-up Class at Benner's Farm or a Learn and Play Class at Suffolk County Farm
Benner's Farm is always making new pop-up classes for kids or you can go there as a family for a private tour. We did a private tour in the fall and it was so much fun! Check out this website calendar of theirs for anything new they are adding. Also, my kids have taken the learn and play classes for many years at the Suffolk County Farm and I always highly recommend them to everyone!
3. Go for a Hike/Nature Walk
Check out our list of where to go for a local hike or nature walk with tips for your family by checking out our guide here.
4. Have some Fun on the Farm
We are lucky in our area of Long Island to have so many farms to pick from! Our favorites are Benner's Farm, Fink's Farm and Suffolk County Farm. Benner's Farm requires a private tour but the other two have open hours. Check each website for more information.
5. Visit the Long Island Aquarium
This one is half inside and half outside so that counts right? We always love visiting the aquarium and have been taking the kids since they were babies. Check with your library if they still sell reduced-price tickets. Make sure you bundle up for the sea lion show, it gets windy in that coliseum but so worth it!

5. Feed the Birds
My family loves feeding the birds! We give cracked corn to the ducks and geese at Avalon Park in Stony Brook, bread to the seagulls at the beach, or bring our own birdseed to Elizabeth Morton Refuge in Sag Harbor (worth the drive!).
